Using a direct painting approach, the class will concentrate on capturing the movement and energetic form of the figure, the unique character and expression of the portrait, and the qualities of light and color emphasizing warm/cool temperature changes. Starting from a simple large abstract block-in, which allows the freedom to think about and change your drawing, color, value and edge handling early on will be encouraged. There will be regular one on one instruction and critique. Roy will paint along with the class developing paintings of his own for demonstration purposes.

Working from the live model, students will learn to work in a direct alla-prima approach where they will aim for good draftsmanship, values and color.  This is a fundamental skill in painting, and learning to mix colors in the right value and placing them correctly in the composition takes much practice. There will be constant demonstrations as well as critiques. Students of all levels are welcome.

Frank
Porcu

Frank L. Porcu is a sculptor, anatomist, and painter who earned a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute and an M.F.A. from the New York Academy of Art. Mr. Porcu has devoted the last seventeen years to the study of the human form, based on the truth of human and quadrupedal dissection. His research in the theories of “anatomical form-making” and its historical usages has provided him with a platform to teach to artists and physicians a “lost philosophy” dealing with the scientific construction of form. He has currently truncated his teaching schedule to take on studio practice for public and private sculpture commissions.

The anatomy text he is authoring is in manuscript form, and is being updated weekly due to the great lessons and explanations demanded of him by his ambitious students.

Mr. Porcu teaches drawing at Chelsea Classical Studio School of Art, anatomy and sculpture at the Art Students League of New York, and he also lectures on stereoscopic anatomy at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Robin Smith will guide students in a 3 dimensional, structural approach to painting and drawing the live model. Working individually with each student, the instructor will help them learn how to trust their eyes and train their hands to capture the unique essentials of each model through color, shape, line and composition while working in a painterly, tactile manner. Poses will generally last 4 weeks and vary between clothed and nude. The class is open to all levels.

Drawing has been the foundation of art for many centuries, and the incredibly diverse and varied approaches continue to inspire much interest from students today. This course will introduce students to the basics of drawing and composition through a series of exercises meant to serve as a foundation based on the human figure. Students of all levels will benefit from this class, which aims to find weaknesses in peoples’ skills and approaches, and then work on strengthening them.
